AI & GRC Consulting

Practical AI Governance, Risk and Audit Support

AI adoption creates new questions around accountability, data protection, privacy, third-party providers, decision-making and control effectiveness.

Muzamani provides defined-scope AI and GRC consulting to organisations that are introducing or already using AI and need a structured approach to governance, risk and control requirements.

Our work combines audit, risk, governance and technology experience with practical methods for assessing AI use, identifying risks and establishing appropriate controls.

How Muzamani Approaches AI

Our approach is based on controlled use, professional judgement and documented review.

Define

Identify the intended use, expected benefit, information involved and associated risks.

Test

Use controlled scenarios to assess whether the proposed AI workflow produces useful and sufficiently reliable outputs..

Validate

Check AI-generated outputs against source information, engagement evidence and defined criteria.

Govern

Document responsibilities, permitted uses, review requirements, confidentiality controls and escalation arrangements.

Improve

Refine the workflow based on testing, review results and changes in technology or applicable requirements.

Responsible Use of AI

AI tools can produce inaccurate, incomplete or misleading outputs. Muzamani therefore treats AI-generated content as material requiring professional review.

AI use within an engagement is subject to the applicable engagement terms, information-security requirements and confidentiality obligations.

Client information is not entered into public or consumer AI tools unless specifically authorised and appropriate safeguards have been established.

Where AI tools are used, relevant outputs are reviewed and validated before they are incorporated into professional deliverables.

The specific AI tools, data-handling arrangements and permitted uses applicable to an engagement are established before use where required.

Independence and Objectivity

AI advisory work is kept distinct from independent assurance responsibilities

Management remains responsible for decisions, implementation and operation of AI governance arrangements. Muzamani does not assume management responsibilities when providing AI advisory services.

Advisory and assurance engagements are separately scoped and documented. Where previous advisory work could create a self-review or other independence threat, the circumstances are assessed before accepting an assurance engagement. Appropriate safeguards are applied where possible, or the engagement is declined where independence cannot be maintained.

Scope Limitations

Our AI & GRC services focus on governance, risk, controls, internal audit and compliance considerations.

They do not include:

  • Technical validation or testing of AI models
  • Certification against ISO/IEC 42001
  • Design, development or operation of client AI systems
  • Management decision-making on behalf of the client

The specific scope, criteria and deliverables are agreed before an engagement begins.

Frameworks and Requirements

The criteria used for an AI or GRC engagement depend on its objectives, sector, technology environment and applicable requirements.

Potential reference points include:

AI governance and risk

  • NIST AI Risk Management Framework (AI RMF)
  • ISO/IEC 42001, Artificial Intelligence Management System
  • ISO/IEC 23894, Guidance on artificial intelligence risk management

Audit, governance and technology

  • IIA Global Internal Audit Standards
  • COBIT
  • COSO
  • King V

Data protection and regulations

  • Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA)
  • Applicable regulatory and organisational requirements

Where an organisation has exposure to international AI regulation, additional requirements may be considered during engagement scoping.

Not every framework applies to every engagement. The relevant criteria are agreed before the work begins.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can AI replace internal auditors?

No. AI can support selected activities within the audit lifecycle, but professional judgement, accountability, evidence assessment and audit conclusions remain with appropriately responsible professionals.

Can Muzamani assess our AI governance arrangements?

Yes. AI governance and risk reviews can be scoped around your AI use cases, governance arrangements, information risks, controls and applicable requirements.

Can you help our internal audit team introduce AI?

Yes. Support can include use-case identification, workflow design, prompt development, validation procedures, documentation and training.

Can you provide AI tools for auditors?

Muzamani is developing governed audit toolkits that combine AI prompts, audit templates, validation procedures and supporting guidance. Products will be released as they are completed.

Will our confidential information be entered into public AI tools?

Not as part of normal Muzamani practice. Client information is not entered into public or consumer AI tools unless specifically authorised and appropriate safeguards have been established.

Is an AI governance review the same as ISO/IEC 42001 certification?

No. Muzamani can provide structured advisory and gap assessment services against agreed criteria. This does not constitute certification against ISO/IEC 42001.
